Today I’ve been enjoying the pleasures of nettles.

WASHINGTON – The United States has credible intelligence from multiple sources
(the same sources that tabloids use when they say “sources say”?) that the al-Qaida terror network is determined to “hit the United States hard” in the coming months
(how far in the future is “coming”?)
in a strike that could be linked to events such
as a coming international economic summit and the summer political conventions,
Attorney General John Ashcroft said Wednesday.

Ashcroft said at a news conference at FBI headquarters that the intelligence,
coupled with recent public statements attributed to al-Qaida, suggested that the network led by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden as “70 percent complete.” The withdrawal of Spanish
troops from Iraq due to the political repercussions of the train bombings March
11 in Spain, Ashcroft added, could lead al-Qaida to try to influence U.S. politics.

“Al-Qaida may perceive that a large-scale attack in the United States this summer or fall could lead to similar consequences,” he aid.

The intelligence does not contain specifics such as timing or method or the place of an attack. But officials said it was highly credible and backed with greater corroboration than usual (what is usual?), including information that operatives may already be in the United States.

Ashcroft, appearing with FBI Director Robert Mueller, drew new attention to photographs of seven suspected al-Qaida operatives whom the FBI has been pursuing for months. They include Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, a Saudi native who once lived in Florida, and Aafia Siddiqui, a woman from Pakistan who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ashcroft also said that recent intelligence indicated that al-Qaida operatives could be “trying to change its face” by traveling with their families to attract less suspicion and seeking recruits “who can portray themselves as European.”

Ashcroft and Mueller outlined an intensive effort by law enforcement, intelligence and homeland security officials to detect and disrupt any potential plots. The FBI was sending a bulletin to about 18,000 state and local law enforcement agencies warning of the threat.

U.S. officials told NBC News that FBI agents would also be dispatched to question every person who entered the United States during the past several months from about a half-dozen Muslim countries to find people who could have information about potential plots. That could add up to as many as 40,000 people, the officials said.

Timing questioned

Earlier, some representatives of law enforcement and firefighters unions, most of them supporters of Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts for president, suggested that the timing of the threat report was suspicious because of polls showing a sagging approval rating for President Bush.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan denied a political aspect.

“The president believes it’s very important to share information appropriately,” McClellan said. “We do that in a number of ways when it comes to looking at the threats we face here in the homeland.” (The hilariously ambiguous quote of the week)

But the Bush administration itself sent conflicting signals on the seriousness with which it viewed the threat.

A senior counterterrorism official, who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, described the information Tuesday as extremely credible and backed by an unusually high level of corroboration.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show that “we have seen for the past several weeks a continuous stream of reporting that talks about the possibilityof attacks on the United States.”

Even if you don’t like “Reality TV”, you should check out on your local PBS station.I don’t even like using the term “reality TV” since it alludes to games and contests. The people on Colonial House aren’t in it to win anything at all. They are in it for the experience, and so far it looks like most of them wish they had never even considered it. The way it works is 22 people from different backgrounds (children and pets included) are put on an old ship and have to re-enact the plight of 17th century colonists coming to North America for the first time. They have to colonize and make a profitable community. They are not allowed ANY modern comforts at all, and they have to dress like the colonists did.All participants were assigned their positions on the boat ride over. Some are even indentured servants. They have to work, eat, sleep, and crap in the woods just like their forefathers. They even have to attend church on Sunday for SIX HOURS! Some of the colonists are real-life atheists while the Governor’s family is very religious. (The Governor is a real-life Baptist minister). What is interesting is how the women are handling their roles. It’s very hard for them to be “the bottom of the barrel” and be left out of all decisions affecting the community. Something tells me there is a LOT more bickering going on in the 21st century than in the 17th. and be sure to watch the show. It may not look and sound as exciting as Survivor or American Idol, but it’s FAR more interesting, intense, and one of the best shows on TV at the moment.

So today I was putting together a banner ad for a Memorial Day promotion, and I thought I’d give it a vintage war poster-type feel. I went searching for inspiration and was led to .I like a lot becuase they usually stir up emotion (good or bad) and intrigue. They can instill excitement, they can offend, and they give you another way of appreciating an event or a band.Looking at the wartime posters gave me the same kind of sensory experience. On top of that, you get a feel for U.S. history. Check out the collection. I especially like the Homefront and Women of World War II sections.

Here’s my favorite story on them so far:

I just got back from a long weekend in Las Vegas, a city with which I have a love/hate relationship. I love going there, and I hate leaving. I love gambling and eating and drinking and shopping, and I hate running out of money.I got in at 6:30am this morning, and as I’m starting to write, I don’t think I’m going to be up to finishing all of what I want to say about Las Vegas. I’ll start tomorrow.
